Pawnee County is a county located in Oklahoma, in the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 16612 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 16307, making it the 43rd most populous county in Oklahoma. The county encompasses an area of 594.87 mi˛ (1540.71 square kilometre ), of which, 569.44 square miles (1474.84 square kilometre) of it is land and 25.43 square miles (65.86 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Oklahoma's 14th smallest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 16612 people in the county, organized into 6383 households, and 4747 families residing in the county. The population density was 29.2 people per square mile (11.27/km˛), it is Oklahoma's 38th most densely populated county. There were 7464 housing units at an average density of 13.1 per square mile (5.06/km˛). The average household size was 2.58 people, and the average family size was 3.02 people. Age range in the county was well distributed with 26.5% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.4 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 16307, The racial makeup of the county was 13283 White, 168 Black or African American, 2029 American Indian, 33 Asian, 9 Native Hawaiian, and 785 from two or more races.
