Paterson City is a city located in the Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population of the city was 149222 as per the 2000 census data. In July 2008, its estimated population was 145643, It is the third largest by population in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The city has a total area of 8.73 square miles (22.61 kmē), of which, 8.44 square miles (21.86 kmē) of it is land and 0.29 square miles (0.75 kmē) of it is water, it is the 51st largest by area in the U.S. state of New Jersey.

The racial makeup of the city was 45913 White, 49095 Black or African American, 901 American Indian, 2831 Asian, 84 Native Hawaiian, 9214 from two or more races and 41184 Ohter races.
