In July 2008, its estimated population was 41111, It is the 60th most populous county in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It has total area of 289.44 miē (749.65 kmē), of which, 226.88 square miles (587.62 kmē) of it is land and 62.56 square miles (162.03 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 12th smallest by total area among North Carolina's county.
