According to the 2000 census it had a population of 59248 inhabitants. It is Florida's 40th largest by population . Its area is just over 26.59 sq mi (68.87 square kilometre), of which, 17.92 square miles (46.41 square kilometre) of it is land and 8.67 square miles (22.46 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 54th largest by area in the U.S. state of Florida.
