Ottumwa City is one of the city of Wapello County, Iowa, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The population of city in 2000 stood at 24998 as per the Census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the city is 24342, giving it the 21st largest population among Iowa. The city extends throughout a territory of 16.47 square miles (42.66 sq km ), of which, 15.8 square miles (40.92 sq km) of it is land and 0.67 square miles (1.74 sq km) of it is water, it is the 19th largest by area in the U.S. state of Iowa. It is ranks 19 in the size of its inland waterways in Iowa.

As of the census of 2000, there were 24998 residents, 10383 households, and 6531 families in the city. The population density was 1582.2 people per square mile (610.89/kmē), it is Iowa's 107th most densely populated city. There were 11038 housing units at an average density of 698.6 per square mile (269.73/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.31 persons, and the average family size was 2.88 persons. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 22.9% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 19% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.6 males. The median age is 38.2 years, The median age of males was 35.5 years, for females the median age was 40.7 years. The racial makeup of the city was 23830 White, 318 Black or African American, 82 American Indian, 196 Asian, 5 Native Hawaiian, 223 from two or more races and 344 Ohter races.
