The county comprises an area of 619.09 mi˛ (1603.44 square kilometre), of which, 615.69 square miles (1594.63 square kilometre) of it is land and 3.4 square miles (8.81 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 43rd largest in terms of geographical size.

In the county the population was spread out, with 26.3% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.8 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 15549, The racial makeup of the county was 98.03% White, 0.56% Black or African American, 0.28% American Indian, 0.36% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 0.73% from two or more races.
