Otero County is a county located in the United States of New Mexico. As of 2000 the population was 62298. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 62776, making it the ninth most populous county in New Mexico. Its area is just over 6627.43 square miles (17164.96 sq km), of which, 6626.5 square miles (17162.56 sq km) of it is land and 0.93 square miles (2.41 sq km) of it is water, it is the third largest by area in the U.S. state of New Mexico.

The population density was 9.4 people per square mile (3.63/kmē), it is New Mexico's 14th most densely populated county. There were 29272 housing units at an average density of 4.4 per square mile (1.7/kmē). The average household size was 2.66 people, and the average family size was 3.14 people. In the county Population was distributed with 29.5% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 21% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.8 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 62776, The racial makeup of the county was 53264 White, 3071 Black or African American, 4085 American Indian, 915 Asian, 109 Native Hawaiian, and 1332 from two or more races.
