Otero County is a county located in the United States of Colorado. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 20311 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 18774, It is the 26th largest in terms of population. The county encompasses an area of 1269.74 mi˛ (3288.61 square kilometre ), of which, 1262.86 square miles (3270.79 square kilometre) of it is land and 6.89 square miles (17.85 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 37th largest by area in the U.S. state of Colorado.

As of the census of 2000, there were 20311 people in the county, organized into 7920 households, and 5473 families residing in the county. The population density was 16.1 people per square mile (6.22/km˛), it is Colorado's 23rd most densely populated county. There were 8813 housing units at an average density of 7 per square mile (2.7/km˛). The average household size was 2.49 persons, and the average family size was 3.04 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 26.9% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.5 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 18774, The racial makeup of the county was 17620 White, 229 Black or African American, 394 American Indian, 164 Asian, 33 Native Hawaiian, and 334 from two or more races.
