Oswego City is one of the city of Oswego County, New York, located towards the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. The city has a population of 17954 as per the 2000 census data. Its population was estimated at 17351 in July 2008, It is the 97th largest in terms of population. The city extends throughout a territory of 11.24 miē (29.11 kmē ), of which, 7.66 square miles (19.84 kmē) of it is land and 3.57 square miles (9.25 kmē) of it is water, it is the 47th largest by area in the U.S. state of New York. It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in New York.

As of the census of 2000, there were 17954 residents, 7338 households, and 3975 families in the city. The population density was 2343.4 people per square mile (904.79/kmē), it would be the 350th most densely populated city in the U.S. state of New York. There were 8080 housing units at an average density of 1054.8 per square mile (407.26/kmē). The average household size was 2.33 persons, and the average family size was 3 persons. In the city the population is diverse age-wise, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 16.5% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males. The median age is 34.9 years, the median age of male residents at 31.8 and the median age of female residents at 37.2. The racial makeup of the city was 95.32% White, 1.04% Black or African American, 0.33% American Indian, 0.82% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, 1.42% from two or more races and 1.07% Other races.
