Orleans Parish is a parish located in Louisiana, in the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 484674 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 311853, It is third most populous parish in Louisiana. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the parish has a total area of 350.21 mi˛ (907.04 square kilometre), of which, 180.56 square miles (467.65 square kilometre) of it is land and 169.66 square miles (439.42 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Louisiana's sixth smallest parish by total area.


According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 484674 people, 188251 households, and 112977 families living in the parish. The population density was 2684.3 people per square mile (1036.41/km˛), it is most densely populated parish in Louisiana. There were 215091 housing units at an average density of 1191.3 per square mile (459.96/km˛). The average household size was 2.48 persons, and the average family size was 3.23 persons. In the parish the population is diverse age-wise, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 11.4% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.3 males. The parish's estimated population as of July 2008 was 311853, The racial or ethnic makeup of the parish was 33.87% White, 61.75% Black or African American, 0.32% American Indian, 2.9% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 1.11% from two or more races.
