Orleans County is a United States county located in the United States of New York. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 44171 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 42135, It is the ninth least populous county in the U.S. state of New York. It covers total area of 817.47 mi˛ (2117.24 square kilometre), of which, 391.4 square miles (1013.72 square kilometre) of it is land and 426.07 square miles (1103.52 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 31st largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks seventh in the size of its inland waterways in New York.

As of the census of 2000, there were 44171 people, 15363 households, and 10839 families living in the county. The population density was 112.9 people per square mile (43.59/km˛), making it the 33rd most densely populated county in New York. There were 17347 housing units at an average density of 44.3 per square mile (17.1/km˛). The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.13. In the county Age distribution was 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 101.8 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 105.1 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 42135, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 38056 White, 3086 Black or African American, 245 American Indian, 155 Asian, 15 Native Hawaiian, and 578 from two or more races.
