According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 401.21 mi˛ (1039.13 sq km), of which, 399.84 square miles (1035.58 sq km) of it is land and 1.37 square miles (3.55 sq km) of it is water, it is the 31st smallest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 126532, The racial makeup of the county was 78.89% White, 13.32% Black or African American, 0.48% American Indian, 5.76% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 1.54% from two or more races.
