Opelousas City is a city located in the St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population of the city was 22860 as per the 2000 census data. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 23220, making it Louisiana's 18th largest. It is spread over 7.07 mi˛ (18.31 square kilometre), of which, 7.06 square miles (18.29 square kilometre ) of it is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 86th largest by area in the U.S. state of Louisiana.

As of the census of 2000, there were 22860 people in the city, organized into 400 households, and 290 families living in the city. The population density was 3240 people per square mile (1250.97/km˛), it is the 18th most densely populated city in the U.S. state of Louisiana. There were 9783 housing units at an average density of 1385.7 per square mile (535.02/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.54 persons, and the average family size was 3.24 persons.
