Ontonagon County is a one of the county from Michigan's 83 counties, located in Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. The county has a population of 7818 as per the 2000 census data. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 6819, It is the third smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is spread over 3741.45 sq mi (9690.31 square kilometre), of which, 1311.53 square miles (3396.85 square kilometre ) of it is land and 2429.92 square miles (6293.46 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the third largest by size in Michigan. It is ranks third in the size of its inland waterways in Michigan.

The population density was 6 people per square mile (2.32/kmē), it is the second least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Michigan. There were 5404 housing units at an average density of 4.1 per square mile (1.58/kmē). The average household size was 2.21 people, and the average family size was 2.75 people. In the county Population was distributed with 20.2% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 23.3% from 25 to 44, 30.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 102.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.5 males. Its population was estimated at 6819 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 96.76% White, 0.35% Black or African American, 1.28% American Indian, 0.18% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 1.41% from two or more races.
