In July 2008, its estimated population was 40033, making it the 24th most populous county in Washington. It covers total area of 5315.16 mi˛ (13766.2 sq km), of which, 5268.07 square miles (13644.24 sq km) of it is land and 47.09 square miles (121.96 sq km) of it is water, it is the largest by area in the U.S. state of Washington.

In the county Population was distributed with 27.7% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 14% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 99.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98 males. Its population was estimated at 40033 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 34041 White, 193 Black or African American, 4538 American Indian, 274 Asian, 35 Native Hawaiian, and 952 from two or more races.
