Obrien County is a county located in the United States of Iowa. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 41722 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 13952, It is the 57th most populous county in the U.S. state of Iowa. It has total area of 449.07 square miles (1163.09 kmē), of which, 438.67 square miles (1136.15 kmē) of it is land and 10.4 square miles (26.94 kmē) of it is water, it is the 46th largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 15102 people in the county, organized into 6001 households, and 4125 families living in the county. The population density was 95.1 people per square mile (36.72/kmē), it is the 56th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Iowa. There were 6509 housing units at an average density of 38.3 per square mile (14.79/kmē). The average household size was 2.42 persons, and the average family size was 2.97 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.8% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 21.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.4 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 13952, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 13661 White, 76 Black or African American, 35 American Indian, 97 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 82 from two or more races.
