In 2000, the population was 8618. making it the 40th most populous in Connecticut. Its area is just over 3.19 square miles (8.26 square kilometre), of which, 3.16 square miles (8.18 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 74th largest by area in the U.S. state of Connecticut.
