Northumberland County is a county in the United States of Virginia. The population of the county was 12259 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 12915, It is the 32nd smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is spread over 285.67 mi˛ (739.88 square kilometre), of which, 192.3 square miles (498.05 square kilometre ) of it is land and 93.36 square miles (241.8 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 77th largest by total area in Virginia. It is ranks seventh in the size of its inland waterways in Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 12259 people in the county, organized into 5470 households, and 3785 families living in the county. The population density was 63.7 people per square mile (24.59/km˛), it is the 89th most populated county in terms of population density. There were 8057 housing units at an average density of 41.9 per square mile (16.18/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.24 persons, and the average family size was 2.7 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 18.6% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 20.2% from 25 to 44, 30.1% from 45 to 64, and 26.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.4 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 12915, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 9599 White, 3187 Black or African American, 18 American Indian, 37 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 74 from two or more races.
