Northampton County is a county located in the United States of Virginia. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 13093 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 13415, It is 34th least populous county in Virginia. It has total area of 795.34 sq mi (2059.92 sq km), of which, 207.37 square miles (537.09 sq km) of it is land and 587.97 square miles (1522.84 sq km) of it is water, it is the sixth largest by area in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is ranks second in the size of its inland waterways in Virginia.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 13093 residents, 5321 households, and 3546 families in the county. The population density was 63.1 people per square mile (24.36/kmē), making its Virginia's 91st most densely populated county. There were 6547 housing units at an average density of 31.6 per square mile (12.2/kmē). The average household size was 2.39 persons, and the average family size was 2.94 persons. The population's age distribution was 23.3% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 87.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.1 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 13415, The racial makeup of the county was 8027 White, 5224 Black or African American, 22 American Indian, 28 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 111 from two or more races.
