Northampton City, Massachusetts is a city of the Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. In 2000, the population was 28978. In July 2008, its estimated population was 28379, It is the 46th largest by population in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. It covers total area of 35.6 sq mi (92.2 sq km), of which, 34.46 square miles (89.25 sq km) of it is land and 1.14 square miles (2.95 sq km) of it is water, making it the tenth largest by size in Massachusetts.

As of the census of 2000, there were 28978 people, 11880 households, and 5878 families residing in the city. The population density was 841 people per square mile (324.71/kmē), giving it the 61st least densely populated city among the Massachusetts.
