Northampton City, Massachusetts is a city of the Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. In 2000, the population was 28978. In July 2008, its estimated population was 28379, It is the 46th largest by population in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. It covers total area of 35.6 sq mi (92.2 sq km), of which, 34.46 square miles (89.25 sq km) of it is land and 1.14 square miles (2.95 sq km) of it is water, making it the tenth largest by size in Massachusetts.

As of the census of 2000, there were 28978 people, 11880 households, and 5878 families residing in the city. The population density was 841 people per square mile (324.71/kmē), giving it the 61st least densely populated city among the Massachusetts. There were 12405 housing units at an average density of 360 per square mile (139/kmē). The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.87. In the city the population was spread out, with 17% under the age of 18, 15.4% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 or older.
