In 2000, the population was 16796. making it the 71st most populous in Massachusetts. It is spread over 5.75 square miles (14.89 kmē), of which, 5.52 square miles (14.3 kmē ) of it is land and 0.22 square miles (0.57 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 90th largest by total area among Massachusetts.
