Nome Census Area is a one of the census area from Alaska's 27 counties, located in Western Region (Pacific) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 9196. Its population was estimated at 9261 in July 2008, giving it the tenth largest population among Alaska's census area. The census area extends throughout a territory of 28283.33 mi˛ (73253.49 square kilometre ), of which, 23000.91 square miles (59572.08 square kilometre) of it is land and 5282.42 square miles (13681.4 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the seventh largest by total area among Alaska's county. It is ranks ninth in the size of its inland waterways in Alaska.

As of the census of 2000, there were 9196 people, 2693 households, and 1899 families residing in the census area. The population density was 0.4 people per square mile (0.15/km˛), making its Alaska's 16th most densely populated census area. There were 3649 housing units at an average density of 0.2 per square mile (0.08/km˛). It has an average household size was 3.33 persons, and the average family size was 4.01 persons. In the census area the population was spread out, with 37.1% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 29% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 5.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 117.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 122.7 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 9261, The racial or ethnic makeup of the census area was 18.29% White, 0.63% Black or African American, 75.55% American Indian, 1.04% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 4.47% from two or more races.
