Nitro City is a city located in Kanawha and Putnam counties, West Virginia, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 6824. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 6784, It is the 22nd most populous in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The city has a total area of 4.08 square miles (10.57 sq km), of which, 3.75 square miles (9.71 sq km) of it is land and 0.33 square miles (0.85 sq km) of it is water, making it West Virginia's 46th largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 6824 residents, 3015 households, and 1937 families in the city. The population density was 1821.2 people per square mile (703.17/kmē), it is West Virginia's 65th most densely populated city. There were 3217 housing units at an average density of 857.9 per square mile (331.24/kmē). The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.8. In the city Age distribution was 20.1% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 26.1% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87 males. The median age was 41.2 years, The median age of males was 39.3 years, for females the median age was 43.4 years. The racial makeup of the city was 6595 White, 111 Black or African American, 17 American Indian, 17 Asian, Native Hawaiian, 57 from two or more races and 27 Ohter races.
