Nicholas County is a county located in the United States of West Virginia. In 2000, county's population was 26562 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 26137, It is the 24th largest in terms of population. It is spread over 654.4 sq mi (1694.89 sq km), of which, 648.63 square miles (1679.94 sq km ) of it is land and 5.77 square miles (14.94 sq km) of it is water, makes it the seventh largest by total area in West Virginia. It is ranks ninth in the size of its inland waterways in West Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 26562 people, 10722 households, and 7761 families residing in the county. The population density was 41 people per square mile (15.83/kmē), it is West Virginia's 35th most densely populated county. There were 12406 housing units at an average density of 19.1 per square mile (7.37/kmē). The average household size was 2.46 people, and the average family size was 2.91 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 23.3% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 26% from 45 to 64, and 15% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 26137, The racial makeup of the county was 25766 White, 75 Black or African American, 71 American Indian, 55 Asian, 6 Native Hawaiian, and 164 from two or more races.
