Newton County is one of the 82 county of Mississippi, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 21838 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 22355, It is the 44th largest in terms of population. The county comprises an area of 579.58 square miles (1501.11 square kilometre), of which, 578.03 square miles (1497.09 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.55 square miles (4.01 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Mississippi's 41st largest county by total area.

In the county the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 26% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 108.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 112.7 females. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 22355, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 14455 White, 6735 Black or African American, 989 American Indian, 57 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 119 from two or more races.
