Newport City is a one of the Newport County, Rhode Island, located in Northeastern Region (New England) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 26475. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 23523, It is ninth most populous in Rhode Island. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.47 mi˛ (29.71 sq km), of which, 7.94 square miles (20.56 sq km) of it is land and 3.54 square miles (9.17 sq km) of it is water, making it the eighth largest by size in Rhode Island. It is ranks fourth in the size of its inland waterways in Rhode Island.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 26475 residents, 11566 households, and 5646 families in the city. The population density was 3336.3 people per square mile (1288.15/km˛), it is the ninth most populated city in terms of population density. There were 13226 housing units at an average density of 1665.7 per square mile (643.13/km˛). The average household size was 2.11 and the average family size was 2.86. In the Newport City, 19.6% of the population was under the age of 18, 14.6% were 18 to 24, 31.5% were 25 to 44, 21.4% were 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 or older.
