Newark City, Essex County, New Jersey is a city located in the Northeastern Region (Mid-Atlantic) of United States. As per the 2000 census, city has a population of 273546 inhabitants. The city's estimated population as of July 2008 was 278980, It is the largest by population in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The city has a total area of 25.96 mi˛ (67.24 square kilometre), of which, 23.8 square miles (61.64 square kilometre) of it is land and 2.17 square miles (5.62 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the ninth largest by area in the U.S. state of New Jersey. It is ranks 14 in the size of its inland waterways in New Jersey.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 273546 residents, 457 households, and 284 families in the city. The population density was 11495 people per square mile (4438.24/km˛), giving it the 23rd most densely populated city among the New Jersey. There were 100141 housing units at an average density of 4207.6 per square mile (1624.56/km˛). The average household size was 2.85 persons, and the average family size was 3.43 persons. In the city the population was spread out, with 27.9% under the age of 18, 12.1% from 18 to 24, 32% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 106.1 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 109.8 females. The median age is 30.8 years, the median age of male residents at 29.6 and the median age of female residents at 32. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 26.52% White, 53.46% Black or African American, 0.37% American Indian, 1.19% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, 4.36% from two or more races and 14.05% Other races.
