As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 1634795, making it the third most populous county in New York. It covers total area of 33.77 sq mi (87.46 kmē), of which, 22.96 square miles (59.47 kmē) of it is land and 10.81 square miles (28 kmē) of it is water, making it New York's smallest county by total area.


As of the census of 2000, there were 1537195 people, 738644 households, and 301970 families living in the county. The population density was 66940.1 people per square mile (25845.72/kmē), giving it the most densely populated county among the New York. There were 798144 housing units at an average density of 34756.7 per square mile (13419.64/kmē). It has an average household size was 2 persons, and the average family size was 2.99 persons.
