New York is a state of the United States. As of 2000 the population was 18976457. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 19490297, making it United States's third largest. The state spans an area of 54556 mi˛ (141299.39 sq km), of which, 47213.79 square miles (122283.15 sq km) of it is land and 7342.22 square miles (19016.26 sq km) of it is water, making it United States's 27th largest by total area. It is ranks seventh in the size of its inland waterways in United States.

As of the census of 2000, there were 18976457 residents, 7056860 households, and 4639387 families in the state. The population density was 401.9 people per square mile (155.17/km˛), making its United States's sixth most densely populated state. There were 7679307 housing units at an average density of 162.6 per square mile (62.78/km˛). The average household size was 2.61 persons, and the average family size was 3.22 persons. In the state the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.4 males. The median age was 35.9 years, The median age of males and females living in New York was 34.5 and 37.2 years respectively. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 18976457, The racial or ethnic makeup of the state was 12893689 White, 3014385 Black or African American, 82461 American Indian, 1044976 Asian, 8818 Native Hawaiian, 590182 from two or more races and 1341946 Ohter races.
