New Salem City is a city located in the Morton County, North Dakota, United States. It is home to over 938 people (2000 census). In July 2008, its estimated population was 862, It is 61st most populous in North Dakota. The city comprises an area of 1.46 square miles (3.78 square kilometre), of which, 1.45 square miles (3.76 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 60th largest by size in North Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 938 people, 411 households, and 246 families residing in the city. The population density was 649 people per square mile (250.58/kmē), it is North Dakota's 138th most densely populated city. There were 448 housing units at an average density of 309 per square mile (119.31/kmē). The average household size was 2.14 persons, and the average family size was 2.83 persons. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 21.1% under the age of 18, 2.9% from 18 to 24, 21% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 34.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 85 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.4 males.
