New Hanover County, North Carolina is a county of the United States of North Carolina. In 2000, the population was 160307. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 192538, giving it the tenth largest population among North Carolina's county. It has total area of 327.92 square miles (849.31 kmē), of which, 198.93 square miles (515.23 kmē) of it is land and 128.98 square miles (334.06 kmē) of it is water, it is the 20th smallest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in North Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 160307 people in the county, organized into 68183 households, and 41599 families residing in the county. The population density was 805.8 people per square mile (311.12/kmē), it is North Carolina's second most densely populated county. There were 79616 housing units at an average density of 400.2 per square mile (154.52/kmē). The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.83. In the county Age distribution was 21% under the age of 18, 12% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 107.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 110.3 females. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 192538, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 81.68% White, 15.65% Black or African American, 0.42% American Indian, 1.16% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 1.02% from two or more races.
