New Castle County is one of the 3 county of Delaware, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 500265. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 529641, It is the largest county by population in the U.S. state of Delaware. It is spread over 493.51 square miles (1278.19 sq km), of which, 426.27 square miles (1104.03 sq km ) of it is land and 67.24 square miles (174.15 sq km) of it is water, makes it the third largest by total area in Delaware. It is ranks third in the size of its inland waterways in Delaware.
According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 500265 people, 188935 households, and 127106 families living in the county. The population density was 1173.6 people per square mile (453.13/kmē), it is Delaware's most densely populated county. There were 199521 housing units at an average density of 468.1 per square mile (180.73/kmē). The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.09. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 24.9% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.8 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 529641, The racial makeup of the county was 378272 White, 121915 Black or African American, 1589 American Indian, 20280 Asian, 361 Native Hawaiian, and 7224 from two or more races.
