New Castle City, Delaware


New Castle City is a city in the New Castle County, Delaware, United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 4862 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 4977, making it Delaware's 19th largest. The city extends throughout a territory of 3.17 sq mi (8.21 kmē ), of which, 3.05 square miles (7.9 kmē) of it is land and 0.12 square miles (0.31 kmē) of it is water, it is the 19th largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks ninth in the size of its inland waterways in Delaware.

As of the census of 2000, there were 4862 people in the city, organized into 2012 households, and 1340 families living in the city. The population density was 1594.6 people per square mile (615.68/kmē), making its Delaware's 25th most densely populated city. There were 2199 housing units at an average density of 721 per square mile (278.38/kmē). The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.93. In the city the population was spread out, with 21.8% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 27.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 88.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.6 males. The median age is 39.6 years, the median age of male residents at 38.6 and the median age of female residents at 40.7. The racial makeup of the city was 77.48% White, 20.2% Black or African American, 0.25% American Indian, 0.39% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, 0.84% from two or more races and 0.84% Other races.
