According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the New Buffalo City is home to 2200 inhabitants. The city's estimated population as of July 2008 was 2423, It is Michigan's 296th largest by population . It has total area of 2.47 sq mi (6.4 square kilometre), of which, 2.42 square miles (6.27 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.05 square miles (0.13 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 280th largest in terms of geographical size.
