New Bern City is a city located in the Craven County, North Carolina, United States. As of 2000 the population was 23128. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 28586, It is the 29th largest by population in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The city spans an area of 26.98 mi˛ (69.88 square kilometre), of which, 25.83 square miles (66.9 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.16 square miles (3 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 20th largest by total area in North Carolina. It is ranks 19 in the size of its inland waterways in North Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 23128 people in the city, organized into 10006 households, and 6187 families residing in the city. The population density was 895.5 people per square mile (345.75/km˛), it is the 246th most densely populated city in the U.S. state of North Carolina. In the city the population was spread out, with 23.9% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 27% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 119.3 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 125.6 females. The median age was 38.9 years, The median age of males was 36.8 years, for females the median age was 40.6 years. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 12943 White, 9325 Black or African American, 75 American Indian, 148 Asian, 9 Native Hawaiian, 296 from two or more races and 332 Ohter races.
