Neosho County is one of the 105 county of Kansas, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The population of the county was 16997 as per the 2000 census data. The July 2008 population estimate is 16223, It is the 33rd most populous county in the U.S. state of Kansas. The county has a total area of 578.02 sq mi (1497.06 kmē), of which, 571.75 square miles (1480.83 kmē) of it is land and 6.27 square miles (16.24 kmē) of it is water, making it Kansas's 18th smallest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 16997 people in the county, organized into 6739 households, and 4684 families living in the county. The population density was 29.7 people per square mile (11.47/kmē), it would be the 28th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Kansas. There were 7461 housing units at an average density of 13 per square mile (5.02/kmē). The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.96. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.1 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 16223, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 15474 White, 189 Black or African American, 194 American Indian, 63 Asian, 3 Native Hawaiian, and 300 from two or more races.
