Nelson County is a United States county located in the United States of Virginia. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Nelson County is home to 14445 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 15321, It is the 40th smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Virginia. Its area is just over 474.31 sq mi (1228.46 kmē), of which, 472.35 square miles (1223.38 kmē) of it is land and 1.95 square miles (5.05 kmē) of it is water, making it the 35th largest by size in Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 14445 residents, 5887 households, and 4147 families in the county. The population density was 30.6 people per square mile (11.81/kmē), it is the 15th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Virginia. There were 8554 housing units at an average density of 18.1 per square mile (6.99/kmē). The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.88. Age range in the county was well distributed with 21.7% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 29.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.4 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 15321, The racial makeup of the county was 12929 White, 2105 Black or African American, 35 American Indian, 35 Asian, 9 Native Hawaiian, and 208 from two or more races.
