Nelson County is a one of the county from North Dakota's 53 counties, located in Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 3715 inhabitants. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 3166, making it the 34th most populous county in North Dakota. Its area is just over 1008.74 sq mi (2612.62 kmē), of which, 981.62 square miles (2542.38 kmē) of it is land and 27.12 square miles (70.24 kmē) of it is water, making it North Dakota's 15th smallest county by total area.

The population density was 3.8 people per square mile (1.47/kmē), it is the 29th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 22.1% under the age of 18, 4% from 18 to 24, 20.3% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 27.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.6 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 3166, The racial makeup of the county was 3113 White, 3 Black or African American, 19 American Indian, 14 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 17 from two or more races.
