Nelson County is a one of the county from Kentucky's 120 counties, located in Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. The population of county in 2000 stood at 37477 as per the Census data. Its population was estimated at 43113 in July 2008, It is Kentucky's 23rd most populous county. It has total area of 424.07 miē (1098.34 kmē), of which, 422.63 square miles (1094.61 kmē) of it is land and 1.45 square miles (3.76 kmē) of it is water, it is the 28th largest by area in the U.S. state of Kentucky.

The population density was 88.7 people per square mile (34.25/kmē), it is 29th most densely populated county in Kentucky. In the county Age distribution was 27.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who were 65 or older.
