Needles City is a one of the San Bernardino County, California, located in Western Region (Pacific) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 4830 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 5246, making it California's 601st largest. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 30.17 sq mi (78.14 sq km), of which, 29.77 square miles (77.1 sq km) of it is land and 0.41 square miles (1.06 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 85th largest by total area among California.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 4830 residents, 1940 households, and 1269 families in the city. The population density was 162.3 people per square mile (62.66/kmē), it is California's 129th least densely populated city. There were 2551 housing units at an average density of 85.7 per square mile (33.09/kmē). The average household size was 2.48 people, and the average family size was 3.03 people. In the city the population is diverse age-wise, with 27.6% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 or older.
