According to the 2000 census it had a population of 545524 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the city is 596462, It is second most populous in Tennessee. It has total area of 497.01 miē (1287.25 kmē), of which, 473.32 square miles (1225.89 kmē) of it is land and 23.69 square miles (61.36 kmē) of it is water, it is the largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Tennessee.
