Muskegon County is a county located in Michigan, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 170200 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 174344, making it the 12th most populous county in Michigan. It covers total area of 1459.3 sq mi (3779.57 sq km), of which, 509.12 square miles (1318.61 sq km) of it is land and 950.18 square miles (2460.95 sq km) of it is water, it is the 22nd largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 170200 people, 63330 households, and 44298 families living in the county. The population density was 334.3 people per square mile (129.07/kmē), making its Michigan's tenth most densely populated county. There were 68556 housing units at an average density of 134.7 per square mile (52.01/kmē). The average household size was 2.59 persons, and the average family size was 3.1 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 27.5% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 29% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.4 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 174344, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 145151 White, 23446 Black or African American, 1448 American Indian, 931 Asian, 50 Native Hawaiian, and 3318 from two or more races.
