Muskegon City is a one of the Muskegon County, Michigan, located in Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 40105. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 39401, It is Michigan's 37th largest by population . The city extends throughout a territory of 18.02 miē (46.67 kmē ), of which, 14.35 square miles (37.17 kmē) of it is land and 3.67 square miles (9.51 kmē) of it is water, it is the 44th largest by area in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is ranks 18 in the size of its inland waterways in Michigan.

The population density was 2794.5 people per square mile (1078.96/kmē), making it the 89th most densely populated city in Michigan. The racial makeup of the city was 60.61% White, 31.67% Black or African American, 1.04% American Indian, 0.46% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, 3.5% from two or more races and 2.69% Other races.
