Muhlenberg County is one of the 120 county of Kentucky, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 31839 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 31187, It is 34th most populous county in Kentucky. It covers total area of 479.43 mi˛ (1241.72 sq km), of which, 474.72 square miles (1229.52 sq km) of it is land and 4.71 square miles (12.2 sq km) of it is water, making it Kentucky's 17th largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 31839 people in the county, organized into 12357 households, and 9056 families living in the county. The population density was 67.1 people per square mile (25.91/km˛), it is Kentucky's 53rd most densely populated county. There were 13675 housing units at an average density of 28.8 per square mile (11.12/km˛). The average household size was 2.45 people, and the average family size was 2.9 people. In the county Age distribution was 22.6% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.2 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 31187, The racial makeup of the county was 94.06% White, 4.8% Black or African American, 0.13% American Indian, 0.14% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.86% from two or more races.
