Mountrail County is a county located in the United States of North Dakota. The population of the county was 6631 as per the 2000 census data. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 6511, It is North Dakota's 19th most populous county. The county extends throughout a territory of 1941.08 square miles (5027.37 sq km ), of which, 1823.93 square miles (4723.96 sq km) of it is land and 117.15 square miles (303.42 sq km) of it is water, makes it the eighth largest by total area in North Dakota. It is ranks third in the size of its inland waterways in North Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 6631 people, 2560 households, and 1753 families living in the county. The population density was 3.6 people per square mile (1.39/kmē), it is North Dakota's 31st most densely populated county. There were 3438 housing units at an average density of 1.9 per square mile (0.73/kmē). The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.09. In the Mountrail County, 28.1% of the population was under the age of 18, 6.8% were 18 to 24, 23.2% were 25 to 44, 24.2% were 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.1 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 6511, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 62.76% White, 0.41% Black or African American, 34.97% American Indian, 0.23% Asian, 0.08% Native Hawaiian, and 1.55% from two or more races.
