Mountainside Borough is a borough located in the Union County, New Jersey, United States. As of 2000 the population was 6602. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 6551, It is the 245th most populous in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The borough encompasses an area of 4.06 mi˛ (10.52 sq km ), of which, 4.02 square miles (10.41 sq km) of it is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 sq km) of it is water, making it the 138th largest by size in New Jersey.

As of the census of 2000, there were 6602 people, 457 households, and 284 families living in the borough. The population density was 1640.8 people per square mile (633.52/km˛), giving it the 132nd least densely populated borough among the New Jersey. There were 2478 housing units at an average density of 616.4 per square mile (237.99/km˛). The average household size was 2.6 persons, and the average family size was 2.95 persons. In the borough the population is diverse age-wise, with 21.1% under the age of 18, 3.8% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 24.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.1 males. The median age is 46.4 years, The median age of males and females living in Mountainside Borough was 45.2 and 47.7 years respectively. The racial or ethnic makeup of the borough was 95.09% White, 0.94% Black or African American, 0.09% American Indian, 2.8% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, 0.74% from two or more races and 0.27% Other races.
