It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 487548, It is tenth most populous county in New Jersey. It has total area of 481.29 mi˛ (1246.54 sq km), of which, 468.99 square miles (1214.68 sq km) of it is land and 12.29 square miles (31.83 sq km) of it is water, makes it the eighth largest by total area in New Jersey.

In the county the population was distributed as follows: 24.8% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.7 males. Its population was estimated at 487548 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 423300 White, 16187 Black or African American, 915 American Indian, 41260 Asian, 267 Native Hawaiian, and 5619 from two or more races.
