Moody County is one of the 66 county of South Dakota, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 6595. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 6414, making it South Dakota's 28th largest county. It is spread over 521.1 square miles (1349.64 sq km), of which, 519.67 square miles (1345.94 sq km ) of it is land and 1.43 square miles (3.7 sq km) of it is water, making it the seventh smallest by size in South Dakota.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 6595 people, 2526 households, and 1762 families living in the county. The population density was 12.7 people per square mile (4.9/kmē), it is the 17th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. There were 2745 housing units at an average density of 5.3 per square mile (2.05/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.58 persons, and the average family size was 3.12 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 29.1% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 100.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 103 females. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 6414, The racial makeup of the county was 83.44% White, 0.37% Black or African American, 12.55% American Indian, 1.06% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 2.57% from two or more races.
