Montpelier City is a city located in Washington County, Vermont, in the Northeastern Region (New England) of United States. The population of city in 2000 stood at 8035 as per the Census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the city is 7760, It is the eighth largest in terms of population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.26 mi˛ (26.57 sq km), of which, 10.25 square miles (26.55 sq km) of it is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 sq km) of it is water, giving it the fifth largest by total area among Vermont.

As of the census of 2000, there were 8035 people in the city, organized into 3739 households, and 1940 families residing in the city. The population density was 784 people per square mile (302.7/km˛), it would be the 34th most densely populated city in the U.S. state of Vermont. In the city the population is diverse age-wise, with 21.3% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 84.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82 males.
