Montgomery County is a United States county located in the United States of New York. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 49708 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 48679 in July 2008, giving it the 12th smallest population among New York's county. It is spread over 410.32 miē (1062.72 kmē), of which, 404.82 square miles (1048.48 kmē ) of it is land and 5.51 square miles (14.27 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 12th smallest by total area in New York.

The population density was 122.8 people per square mile (47.41/kmē), it is the 30th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of New York. There were 22522 housing units at an average density of 55.6 per square mile (21.47/kmē). The average household size was 2.42 people, and the average family size was 2.98 people. The population's age distribution was 24.5% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.9 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 48679, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 95.67% White, 2.17% Black or African American, 0.32% American Indian, 0.78% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 1.04% from two or more races.
